2024 Sock Drive

Socks can be SOOOOO much fun!

Often times, people with colorful socks are perceived to be smarter, more creative, and successful. Colorful socks allow you to show your fun side, and give you a chance to express it. Socks are certainly not the most obvious piece of clothing, but they can definitely say a lot about you.

Socks show off personality. Socks show a person’s creativity. Your choice in socks could give you more confidence. Socks can allow you to connect with others AND socks can be GREAT conversation starters. (GoldieSocks)

But what about those that can’t afford to buy even one pair of plain white socks? Did you know that socks are among the most needed and requested items at homeless shelters, yet among the least often donated.

Why is Educators Rising NWSISD collecting socks?

“Some Americans give food, coats and other clothing to shelters. But donating socks was not something most people thought about.” And, he (Tom Costello, Jr.) said, socks are very helpful at keeping people warm, in cold weather. (The Joy of Sox)

Living on the streets can be hazardous to the feet. Most homeless people face foot care problems because they often lack resources to buy well-fitting, adequate footwear. In most cases, these folks resort to wearing footwear in the wrong size, or footwear that lack adequate support, and often go for long periods of time without taking off their shoes or changing their socks. In some cases, they don’t have access to footwear at all. Blisters and frostbite are two of the most common resulting conditions.

Moreover, many homeless people have a condition called polyneuropathy, in which they lose nerve function and cannot feel irritations of the feet. The thickened skin can then break down to an ulcer and become infected, causing sepsis or even deep bone infections. Lack of access to quality health care can exacerbate these problems. All of this can be mitigated with proper foot care, including access to clean socks.

To put it another way: Socks are critical to our health. (Harold Cox)

Here is where you can help!

We are going to collect as many socks as possible. BE CREATIVE! Turn your donation boxes into something fun… Maybe your basket will be a washing machine, a colorful, BRIGHT box or even a game that donators can play. Invite your teachers, peers, COMMUNITY, etc… to donate socks to our sock drive. Your donation of new socks will benefit programs for the homeless… those living in shelters and on the street. Let’s make this the biggest sock drive we have ever had!

There will be a prize given to the school that collects the most socks.
